How does Pilates differ from other exercises?

Every Pilates exercise is centered around eight basic principles:

  • Relaxation
  • Concentration
  • Breathing
  • Flowing Movements
  • Alignment
  • Co-ordination
  • Centering
  • Stamina

 

All the exercises are tailored to suit the individual's needs and level of physical fitness. Pilates relies on strengthening the postural muscles which stabilise the torso. The body becomes realigned as muscle imbalance is corrected. Pilates further differs from other exercise methods, as it offers both mental and physical training, which is important in the way you approach an exercise. It avoids the possibility of muscle and ligament damage sometimes associated with other fitness regimes and can be perfect, for early rehabilitation, as many of the exercises are performed in gravity reduced settings. The consistent success rate in helping back problem and RSI sufferers has brought Pilates to the attention of osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and GP's.
